The coal city of Enugu is now in festive mood as governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi accords civic reception to players and officials of Rangers International Football Club who won this year’s Aiteo Cup after 35 years.
Rangers defeated Kano Pillars 4-2 on penalty kicks after it ended 3-3 at regulation time.
The Flying Antelopes trailed 3-0 after 48 minutes before mounting an extraordinary comeback to achieve what has today one down in history as ‘Miracle of Asaba’.
Rangers have won the cup six times, last being in 1983 when they pegged DIC Bees of Kaduna 3-2 on penalties after a scoreless draw after 90 minutes.
Governor Ugwuanyi was physically present at Stephen Keshi Stadium Asaba when Rangers performed the Asaba miracle.
He had prior to the game urged the players to win the cup and “leave the rest for me”.
At today’s event scheduled for Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium at 10 a.m, the state Chief executive is expected to announce reward to the players and their officials.
Two years ago, under same governor Ugwuanyi regime, RANGERS broke a 32-year-trophyless CAMPAIGN by lifting the NPFL trophy.
He rewarded the team then with cash incentives, setting the tonic for house or land reward this time around.
In his three years in the saddle, Ugwuanyi has driven Rangers through two domestic titles.
All the local governments in the state are mandated to be at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium on Ogui Road for the reception.
