Religion is looked at from different perspectives based on the
angle which one understands it. However, according to Webster‟s Dictionary of English Language, Religion
refers to man‟s expression of his acknowledgement of the divine or a system of belief and practices relating to
the sacred and uniting its adherents in communities. This shows that religion focuses on what is ultimate or
absolute and taught of worship. Therefore, relationships between the transcendent and men demands total
submission and an absolute obedience. An important dimension to the definition of
religion, which is essential for the search for peace, is the often forgotten fact that religious relationship is in fact
two dimensional. It is not only vertical but also horizontal; it does not only refer to the relationship between man
and God, but also the relationship between man and the society.
In Nigeria, even though our foremost nationalists were drawn from the different major ethnic nationalities with some from minority tribes, they were all united with the support of their people for the common purpose of attaining self-governance and self-determination for a sovereign nation, Nigeria.
Today, we are embroiled in a war of attrition in which those on the vanguard of discord are employing the instrument of religion to set the people against themselves.
- Due to the disqualification of the student union government President aspirant ayinde sobour, we interview some student and comrade and it was said “ayinde sobour is the man, the management disqualified him without a reason they disqualified him saying he’s a Muslim he cannot lead,how can you say someone cannot lead because he’s a muslim, one of the candidate is sponsors by the management so that they can control him to work against the student ,they disqualified him because hes the voice of the voiceless, he’s vibrant he speak the student mind, the disqualified him because the management cannot control him”
Just recently, precisely in February 1, 2017, the Acting President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo set up a Presidential Task Force to inquire into the astronomic increase in the prices of food items, religion cannot therefore be allowed to distract the government from looking for ways to find succor to the already pauperized populace.
While our political and religious leaders appear to be opposed to this turn of events in words, a lot is still left undone in terms of practical steps to stern this ugly trend. I agree with those who opined that the beating of the drum of war by religious bigots is a lazy way of trying to explain the failure of the institution of State, particularly security, in enforcing the secularity of our Nation State.
