There has been no dull moment at the 2018 Mutual Benefits National Open Badminton Championships
going on at the Mutual Benefit/Nigeria Police Badminton Hall inside the Nigeria Police College complex, Ikeja.
In some of the matches decided yesterday, pre-championship favourite and number two seed, Godwin Olufuwa of Lagos State breezed past Kabiru Adamu from Bauchi 21/8, 21/9 to move to the next round.
Another serious contender for the men’s singles title, Aliyu Alhaji Shehu from Niger State also defeated
Yinusa Momoh of Federal Capital Territory 21/16, 21/18.
In other men’s singles matches decided yesterday, Anuoluwapo Opeyori of Lagos State defeated Chiroma
Emmanuel of Kebbi state 2-0, Segun Idowu of Ogun State sent home Mustapha Mohammed of Kaduna State in a keenly contested encounter that kept spectators on the edges of their seats. Idowu walked away the winner after achieving a score of 22/20, 15/21 and 24/22.

It was a match that could have gone either way as the players ran neck-to-neck. At the end, Idowu had to dig deep to overcome his Kaduna State counterpart.
Other winners in the men’s singles include Abubakar Bakari of Taraba State, Jimkan Ephraim, of Oyo State, Usman Ishiaq of Oyo State and Clement Krobakpor of River State who beat Mubarak Salisu of Yobe State in straight sets21/19, 21/16.
In the Women’s singles matches there were a number of walk overs. Jimon Rukayat walked over Esther John. Ihenseken Blessing also walked over Ajibade Deborah. Ibrahim Rahana also walked over Uduma Emilian in another match.
However, Ijadare Grace defeated Maryan Nwaogbu 21/11 and 21/17 to advance while Funke Ayenugbe defeated Abiola Moturayo 21/10, 21/17. Felicia Omotola defeated Romoke Taofik of Kwara to advance.
Other women’s singles matches decided yesterday Dorcas Adesokan of Ogun State, Ramatu Yakubu
of FCT, Ruth Ebere of Delta defeated Imelda Joshua of FCT.
