Lagos City Cycling Grand Prix: 2000 West African riders sign up 

At least over 2000 cy clists from Togo, Ghana, Cameroon, Benin Republic and Nigeria are expected to participate at the maiden Lagos City Cycling Grand Prix (LCCGP) 1.0 billed to hold in Lagos between 18th and 19th of January next year.

The two-day event, the organizers, Shonga Africana Limited believe would serve as a catalyst to the development of cycling as a sporting event using Lagos as a focal point and stimulating the interest of the populace towards cycling as a pleasurable fun activity, for fitness and as an option for urban transportation as in some advanced cities like Copenhagen, Amsterdam, Paris, Berlin and Beijing.

According to the Managing Director of Shonga Africana Limited, Daniel Anyankah the goal is to ensure the LCCGP becomes a world class event such as the Tour de France and to obtain UCI – Union Cycliste Internationale (Cycling World Governing body) accreditation for the event.

Anyankah said part of the objectives of the event is to, “ re-kindle interest in cycling as a viable sport in Nigeria, stimulate interest in the private sector in cycling as a sporting event whereby our professional cyclists will be able to participate in more cycling events and put  Nigeria in a position of sporting prominence”.

He said the City Cycling Grand Prix will be involving both professional and amateur cyclists passing through several major streets in Lagos metropolis adding that the first day will be focused on Secondary school students from Lagos geared towards the honour of former Chairman of the Lagos State Commission and Special Adviser to the Executive governor of Lagos state, late Mr Deji Tinubu for his contributions to sports administration.

“ The winners of the Secondary School category will be awarded with the Deji Tinubu Cycling prize for schools in his honour. The second day will have participants from Togo, Ghana, Benin Republic, Cameroon and host Nigeria with technical support from Cycling Federation of Nigeria (CFN), Lagos Cycling Association and FT Cycle Care limited” he said adding that the race course is approximately 100km from the Teslim Balogun Stadium take off point.
