Video assistant referee technology (VAR) will make its debut at the 2018 World Cup in Russia this summer despite lingering opposition from within and outside football.
The technology is designed to help referees with four key decisions: goals, penalties, straight red cards and cases of mistaken identity.
FIFA president Gianni Infantino said on Friday.
“We are going to have in 2018, for the first time, a World Cup with VAR,” said Infantino after a meeting of the FIFA Council which, as expected, rubber-stamped the go-ahead given by the rule-making International Football Association Board (IFAB) in Zurich two weeks ago.
“This has been approved and we are really very happy with this decision.”
The 2018 World Cup takes place in Russia from June 14-July 15.
